Who we are?
Association of Teachers of Visual Expression and Communication. A professional network of people working in the field of teaching visual expression and communication; visual art teachers; art educators; social engaged cultural workers; activist artists working in educational contexts.
Our TEAM : The Association is managed by social bodies elected by the members every three years: Direction Board; Fiscal Council and Assembly. Also integrating the following working groups with members appointed by the Board for a period of four years:

What do we do?
We advocate for quality art education for all. We influence a wide variety of opinion formers, policy makers and stakeholders to defend and promote outstanding education through art and visual art education across all phases of learning.
We are a community of learners: We organize collaborative learning through seminars; conferences; training courses; workshops; exhibitions and art festivals.
APECV has an in-service teacher training centre (Centro de Formacao de Professores Almada Negreiros CFAN) certificated by the Portuguese Center for Teachers Professional Development offering in-service art teachers courses for all the regions of Portugal.
We promote challenging calls for interdisciplinary projects; we share practice and research through our publications and events.
We Organize :

international interchange projects promoting diversity, inclusion, environmental and cultural awareness.
Long life Training Activities such as courses; MOOCs and workshops.
We organize Local and International Conferences, seminars and congresses as well as exhibitions about art; art education and education.
We are Publishers: The association has a network with possibilities to disseminate information , products and results through conferences, seminaries, congresses; webpage , open source e-books and the journals of art education ‘Imaginar’ and Invisibilidades (peer reviewed).

Mission according to APECV Statutes
The study and investigation of artistic education, art teaching; teaching expression and visual communication, its pedagogy and didactics; support teachers and educators , promote exchange of experiences, carrying out training actions for teachers; educators and artists, network with other organizations; art education advocacy in Portugal; production of cultural events; exhibitions; artistic residencies and research laboratories about theories and artistic practices in education.
Our Partners
APECV has a collaboration protocol with the city of Viseu. APECV has the support of the Portuguese Ministry of Education and works as a consultant for curriculum and national examinations audits. APECV is affiliated in the International Society for Education Through Art ( InSEA), as InSEA member integrates the World Alliance for Arts Education WAAE, APECV founded the Ibero American Network of Art Education RIAEA . At a national and international level APECV promotes activities in formal and informal educational settings such as schools, museums and cultural centres for children, young people and adults such as visual arts contests, seminars, exhibitions and workshops.
HOW?
Objective1: Develop transcultural methods for art education
How?
By inviting art educators from other countries/cultures to participate in our projects/ workshops/training courses for teachers.
By inviting art educators from other countries/cultures to attend our seminars and congresses and write articles/visual essays/photo-essays and vídeo essays to our journals.
Timing/Activities : 2 issues of each journal; 1 conference; 4 seminars per year.
Evaluate the process through interviews; analysis of audio visual recorded data (ensuring data protection policies; following ethical guidelines of EU, Portugal and APECV)
Objective 2: Develop pedagogies through art to foster competencies to equip learners to sócio and environmental challenges
How?
Design and implement art education training events to develop learning methods fostering creativity; visual communication; art expression; design thinking; problem solving skills through art , crafts and design processes and tecnologies.
Activities: Artistic residencies/ research laboratories including workshops for teacher training;
Timing/Activities: 4 workshops; 2 artistic residencies; 8 teacher training courses per year.
Evaluate the process through focus group interviews; analysis of audio visual recorded data (ensuring data protection policies; following ethical guidelines of EU, Portugal and APECV).
Objective 3: Implement learning through arts small scale programmes for communities.
How?
Identify groups with inexistent art education programmes or a lack of offer of art activities as learning, specially marginalised groups (disability, minorities, social excluded)
Establishing protocols with stakeholders (associations; municipalities; social centers; charity organisations, schools; etc) offering learning through arts' activities for their members/users/learners.
Design a coherent program of workshops with the participants responding to the needs of the community
Evaluate the process through focus group interviews; analysis of audio visual recorded data (ensuring data protection policies; following ethical guidelines of EU, Portugal and APECV).
Timing/ Activities: 10-15 workshops per year integrating artistic residencies; with final seminar/exhibition to make visible the results.

Ensuring the continuity of the Projects
APECV elected boards have a 3 year period; APECV Nominated Boards ( Pedagogical Board; Research Board; Ethics and Publications Board) have a 4 year period to ensure the transition and garanteee the commitments signed by the previous elected board.
